Description

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Curator, this position performs responsibilities related to the documentation, care, and preservation of the museum collection. This position is primarily responsible for coordinating the logistics of the second phase of the collection assessment program.This is a full-time, one-year term position. 

DUTIES INCLUDE:

A. Responsible for assisting with a series of collection assessments by consultants.

A1. In consultation with the Chief Curator, research and identify consultants with expertise in the history and value of specified collection subsets (wheeled vehicles, art, textiles, etc.).

A2. Coordinate logistics associated with consultant travel, lodging, and etc.

A3. Provide and facilitate consultant access to the collections and relevant files; track progress.

B. Accurately record new information in museum collection records, in consultation with the Chief Curator and the Conservator and Collections Manager.

B1. Update the accession files with pertinent written documentation as needed.

B2. Update catalogue records in the collection database

C. Assist with recommendation to deaccession paperwork, research of disposal methods, and logistics of disposal of deaccessioned items.

C1. Participate in meetings with curatorial staff to review and discuss consultants’ recommendations.

C2. Fill out paperwork and obtain necessary approvals for items selected for deaccessioning.

C3. Research and make recommendations for disposal of deaccessioned items.

D. Work with museum staff to assure the professional and efficient operations of the museum.

D1. Adhere to the professional standards, practices, and ethics as recognized by the American Association of Museums and the American Institute of Conservation and the application of those professional standards, practices and ethics at the Adirondack Experience.

D2. Stay abreast of all current practices in the museum profession at large.

D3. Participate in other museum activities as assigned.

 
Position Requirements
  1. MA degree in museums studies or equivalent experience.
  2. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to articulate the mission of the institution.
  3. Strong administrative and organizational skills. Attention to detail critical.
  4. Ability to manage time efficiently, work on multiple, simultaneous projects and deadlines and the ability to work under pressure.
  5. Ability to work independently and within a team.
  6. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
