Description

The museum is looking for outgoing and enthusiastic individuals with education and experience related to Museum Studies, Education, History, Interpretation, Environmental Education, Outdoor Recreation, Wilderness Studies, or similar fields. The museum will provide training for regional, cultural and natural history, Certified Interpretive Guide (certification from the National Association for Interpretation), and as needed, Wilderness First Aid (2 year certification from Red Cross).

Interpretation staff will lead informal interpretation programs, implement a variety of family and public programs and may work in our exciting, Life in the Adirondacks exhibit, Artists & Inspirations in the Wild exhibit, or in our indoor and outdoor activity areas and exhibitions.

Rate of Pay: $15.50/hr.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The main purpose of the position is to conduct various programs that serve diverse, mulit-generational audiences at the Adirondack Experience. This position assists in the daily operations of museum programs and participates in the planning and development of museum programs. Interpretation Assistants help visitors make connections between their own lives and museum exhibits, interactives, collections, and programs.  

 
Position Requirements
  • RESPONSIBILITIES:

    A.  Exhibit Based Interpretation

    A1. Research, develop, and conduct exhibit based interpretive programs, including traditional tours, hands-on activities, storytelling, and guided discussion.

    A2.  Create a welcoming educational environment in museum exhibits by actively utilizing a variety of interpretive techniques. 

    A3.  Take initiative to offer appropriate interpretive programs based on exhibit elements and audience size, needs and characteristics.

    A4.  Attend training session and study site manual and program-related materials provided by supervisor.

     

    B.  Visitor Services

    B1.  Greet visitors – adults and children alike—in a pleasant, welcoming manner, encouraging exhibit-based questions or conversation if the visitor is so inclined.

    B2.  Read physical and verbal cues from visitors to provide them with excellent customer service and general information.

    B3.  Demonstrate excellent nonverbal communication (eye contact, welcoming facial expressions, open and friendly posture and body orientation, friendly tone of voice, etc.).

    B4.  Monitor visitor use of exhibits and redirects inappropriate behavior; informs supervisors of emergencies or exhibit malfunctions.

    B5.  Provide directions to visitors for personal services such as restrooms, meals, snacks, telephones, first aid, membership information, and shopping opportunities in a knowledgeable and accurate manner.

    B6.  Assist visitors with wheelchairs and strollers entering, exiting and moving through an exhibit when necessary.

    B7.  Maintain and replenish exhibit and activity site collateral.

    C.  Security

    C1. Assure the safety of artifacts, exhibits, buildings and grounds by observing visitors’

    behavior and if necessary requesting in a quiet, pleasant manner, without embarrassment that inappropriate behavior be changed.

    C2. Report immediately a missing artifact, damaged exhibition element, or a part of the

     exhibit building that is need of repair.

    C3. Have knowledge and understanding of the Adirondack Experience’s Emergency Procedures.  Guidelines will be provided.

    C4. Shut off lights and lock doors at the end of the day.

    D. Light Cleaning

    D1.  Clean and maintain exhibit areas and the interactive stations within exhibits. Cleaning guidelines for each exhibit will be provided.

    Sweep and/or vacuum

    Clean glass

    Dust

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:           
  •   Familiarity with Adirondack history and art history.
  •   Friendly, positive attitude and attentive demeanor required
  •   Willingness to participate in on-going museum education and collections-based training
  •   Mobility across campus and ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time (reasonable accomodations available).
  •   Ability to lift 20 pounds.
